How to Select the Best Sunscreen [Product Review]

If there is a survey about the most popular skincare product in Malaysia, I wouldn't be surprised if sunscreen came out topping the list.

Malaysia weather is generally hot and sunny all year round. A day without exposing to sunlight is rare, unless you are the typical couch potato. Sunlight is the main source of UV (ultraviolet) ray which provides essential Vitamin D but is also a natural enemy of young and flawless skin. It accelerates aging, causes freckles and dehydrates the skin.

Here is when sunscreen, or commonly known as sunblock here, comes in handy. Sunscreen helps shield our skin from the harmful UV ray. During my previous Bangkok trip, I made sure to apply sunblock everyday before going out and even brought along my sunblock to reapply it in the noon before the sunblock thins out.

I know the variety of sunscreen in the market can be quite confusing so I have listed five (5) criteria for selecting the best sunscreen.

1) Spray or Lotion type?
There are articles that reveal the risks of using spray-on sunscreen. Although it is convenient to use and less greasy, it is impossible to avoid inhaling the chemical spray because the particles are too small to be seen. It is also easy to miss a spot when spraying sunscreen on your skin so you might not get maximum coverage.

2) 'Broad spectrum' sunscreen
Some sunscreen products only protect against UV-B ray but there are few in the market that protect against both UV-A & UV-B ray to ensure maximum protection (e.g. Sun off a Beach). UV-B is the chief culprit behind sunburn, while UV-A, which penetrate the skin more deeply, is associated with wrinkling, leathering, sagging, and other light-induced effects of aging. So it is important to check whether the product is able to protect your skin from both types of sunrays.

3) SPF
'SPF' which stands for 'Sun Protection Factor' refers to protection against UV-B radiation which burns the skin. A few years ago, choosing a good sunscreen meant you just looked for a high SPF - which rates how well the sunscreen protects against ONE type of cancer-causing UV-B. The truth is you don't want a sunscreen with SPF higher than 50 because it might expose your skin to damaging UV-A rays, which also cause skin cancer. A moderate SPF of about 50 is hence more than enough.

4) Portable in pocket, no sticky sensation
You need to bring along your sunscreen if you are exposing your skin to the sunlight for long hours. Sunscreen normally runs out after one or two hours depending on the exposure so make sure to reapply it often. This is when a portable sunscreen makes a great choice because you can put it into your pocket or hook it onto your sling bag. It is also important to buy a sunscreen which doesn't give the greasy feeling but also moisturises your skin as well.

5) Water resistant
If you are going to be in the water or exercising, get a sunscreen which is resistant to water and sweat.

While selecting the best sunscreen is important, it is even more crucial to use it correctly. Here is an important tip to make good use of the sunscreen that you bought - Lay it on THICK.

Slather a generous, thick layer on your face or body regardless of how ghostly and pale you look after applying. A good sunscreen should blend with the skin after application and not have you looking like a Peking-opera performer. Sunscreen is like toothpaste, if you don't use it enough, it's not going to work. Many sunburns which occur despite using the sunscreen are caused by infrequent and faulty application.

This is also mentioned in a Korean beauty programme called 'Get It Beauty'.

Tips: Use a tablespoon of sunscreen on your face and about 50 gram for the whole body.

So after carefully going through all the criteria, I have finally found one sunscreen product that successfully fits all the criteria listed above - Sun Off A Beach!

Sun Off A Beach does not only fit all the criteria above (lotion, broad spectrum, high SPF but not >50, portable and water resistant), it also contains Ceramides which are critical components of our skin barrier to not only keep pathogens out, but also to keep moisture in. This hydration is necessary to allow cellular turnover while keeping our skin healthy and vibrant. It also maintains the firmness of the skin. It sounds like a dream come true for skincare product lovers!

Not to mention it is also suitable for both face and body unlike some products that are only suitable for either one.

There are two types that you can choose from - Anti-aging & Sensitive. I chose anti-aging because I was so afraid that the damage of sunlight would make me look older than my real age.

As you can see, the sunscreen is fast absorbing and quickly blends with the skin after application without causing your skin to look greasy and pale. Plus it doesn't have the sticky after-feel which deters people from using sunblock. Remember, a tablespoon for your face! Not teaspoon!

Sun Off A Beach can be hooked onto anywhere for convenient use. Surely gonna hook it onto my sling bag when I'm going for a beach trip at Haeundae Beach in Busan!

Lastly, I would rate a 5 star ✮ for the convenience and high performance of this product! Would sincerely recommend it to anyone who is planning to buy sunscreen *thumbs up*.

The price is RM22.80 for 50g! 100g is also available for regular user.

Nikko Product Review + Nikko Nikki Product Launch [HISHOP]

Here's a question: what is the most important body part that determines a woman's confidence and beauty?

What would be your answer? Face? Hair? Butt or bust?

I once watched a popular Korean reality series called 'Let Me In/Let美人' shared by people on Facebook. Basically, it is a show that sponsors free plastic surgery for women who have serious issues with their look and confidence level.

That particular episode I watched was about a housewife with extremely flat chest (about A- cup). She had difficulty in purchasing bras in bra shop as she was embarassed by her non-existent breasts. She also had to deal with constant jeers and stares from the public and even her own children.

In short words, she was a women with very low confidence. You can tell that by looking at her bad slouched posture in order to hide her flaw. However, the ugly duckling story ends with a happy ending as the housewife was given the chance to undergo a Korean breast implant surgery which totally transformed her into a beautiful swan.

The lesson of this story is beautiful breasts are the symbol of women's beauty though it is a part seldom addressed publicly.

You must be thinking how can we improve how our bust look other than implant surgery or chest workout?

The secret lies in Nikko Maxxi Breast Firming Cream, which is a newly launched beauty product by Miyoku. Maxxi Breast Firming Cream is designed to help improve breast contour, combating sagging and remarkably gives your bust firmer, lifted, curvy and more beautiful appealing look.

Long story short, let me just show you how this product works.

One of the things that I love most about this product is that the bottle is designed in a way that you won't need to stick you finger inside the content in order to get the cream out *you would't want to contaminate the rest of the cream with our bacteria-filled fingers, right?*. Open the lid and gently press the pump downwards several times to obtain a desired amount of cream.

The cream is now readily to be applied on your breast area. Gently massage cream into entire breast surface from base to top. Massage into inside of breast using circular motion for 1-5 minutes and move along to the top surface. Repeat the same on the outside of breast with same circular motion until the cream has been absorbed into skin. Use twice a day, morning and night after shower.

So is this product really useful? Check the before and after difference of my hand as an example.

This is my hand before applying the breast firming cream. Observe the eminence near thumb area *Sorry for the out of focus photo* *Blame the 135mm DSLR lens*

And this is the after photo. Notice how the eminence has become firmer and more plump than before? The same magic will happen to our breasts once we applied the cream. I always thought breast firming cream is a hoax but this product really works wonders *Note: I did not squeeze the area on purpose*

Visit Jac's blog for clearer comparison pictures!

Guardian - My Date With Beauty

Hi readers! I know I rarely blog about beauty-related events which I seldom join. Well, I'm not even qualified to be a beauty blogger to begin with. However, the Great Guardian Makeover is one of the events that I have joined recently in an effort to claim the beauty blogger title haha. Ehem, actually the truth is I decided to join the event because the venue was near my place and I was so tempted by the makeover session.

The Great Guardian Makeover is a beauty event organised by Guardian, the leading pharmacy, health and beauty retail chain in Malaysia, to make ladies feel good from the inside out. The yearly event started since 2008, and has been very successful till now. Themed "My Date with Beauty", this year's Great Guardian Makeover was held at One Utama Shopping Centre. Bloggers of the event were given a makeover by A Cut Above Academy, a super awesome goodies bag, a RM50 Guardian voucher and a personalized photo to bring home.

Besides media bloggers, there are benefits for walk-in customers too as customers who purchased RM20 and above including one participating brand in a single reciept were also entitled to one makeover ticket at RM10 to join the Great Guardian Makeover Event. Each Makeover Ticket entitled the customer to a makeover session, a photo session and a goody bag. 18 brands participated in this year's event including L'Oreal Paris, Maybelline New York, Alcon, Avene, Bio Essence, BioGrow Oat BG22, Biore, Blackmores, Brands, Dermatix, Enchanteur, Hada Labo, Nano White, Neutrogena, Nivea, Oslee, Palmer's and Safi.

That's true that's true haha.

This year's theme colour was obviously pink.

A group of energetic dancers in vibrant outfit to heat up the atmosphere by dancing to William Pharrell's hit song, 'Happy'. I guess the purpose is to bring up the important message of being happy with just the way you are.

Shake it shake it.

Stylists from A Cut Above Academy are also included in the group photo session with the representatives of Guardian Malaysia and the dancers.

Photobooth for the participants pose with cute and funny props. In conjunction with the Great Guardian Makeover, there are also two online contests - a Photobox contest on Facebook and an Instagram contest. The contest period is from 5th April to 30th April. For the Photobox contest, participants are to pose creatively with the given props at this photobooth, LIKE the Guardian facebook page and look for your photo in the "Photo Box Contest" album. Tag yourself on the photo and upload it as your Facebook profile picture. The lucky winner wins a Designer Bag worth RM1,640.

<3 <3 <3

On the Instagram Contest, participants need to follow Guardian on Instagram at #guardianmalaysia, snap a selfie and submit the photo and in not more than 20 words tell Guardian "What makes you beautiful". Tag @guardianmalaysia and #GuardianBeauties and you are on your way to win a Designer Bag worth RM1,140.

Maybelline booth!

Took a picture with a hairstylist who decided to straighten my hair with slight inward curves at the end. I love it when my hair is sleek and shiny after straightening without the annoying fuzziness.

Media bloggers are invited to Dave Deli's for a refreshment session. I was delighted to see my favourite Foot Long Sausage on the menu. I used to order this whenever I went to Dave Deli's when I was young.

Generous portion of sausage, mashed potatoes, garden salad and coleslaw.

Look at my sleek and shining hair! Does it remind you of Cheong Soong Yi from the hit Korean drama 'You Who Came From Another Star'? Haha I know I'm far from it but I just mad love this hairstyle. Too bad it would't stay the same without me putting the effort to learn how to manage and style my hair.

Group selfie with Christy and Shermin after the makeover session.

Coffee with Christy at Seven Cups, Damansara Perdana. The Hot Mocha that Christy ordered was surprisingly good! It tastes like bitter sweet dark chocolate if you know what I mean ; ) Would love to order this again the next time I drop by =)

Hot chocolate for me to avoid the caffeine intoxication.

Love the blue wallpaper at the back which matches well with my outfit. Haha.

The rest are some random photoshoot of the new commercial area situated at Damansara Perdana.

#OOTD Blue denim jacket, military singlet and leather pants from House of Humerus.

Do you like my 'emo' themed photoshoot? Christy said it looked like some horror movie poster and named it 'The Unrented' Haha.

Lastly, it's time to reveal the contents of the awesome goodies bag that we had received earlier at the event. Tadaa! Was surprised by the generosity and the variety of items given. =) Thanks Guardian Malaysia and Butterfly Project Malaysia for the opportunity to receive such great products.

My favourite items from the goodies bag would be Oslee Honey Sugar Mask (skin does feel really smooth and the pores are less visible after application), Palmer's Hydrating Gel Lotion, Blackmores supplements, Avene's Skin Whitening Range and L'Oreal Shampoo for colour damaged hair.

That's all for today!
